Henner Rusch wins Farm Lichtenstein Enduro
Those who are familiar with the region south of Windhoek know, one can find the ideal Enduro "playground" here. Beautiful savannah landscapes – here and there we see antilopes grazing – alternate with mountainous terrain, and in between gravel passages, and worst of all: deep sand. The writer knows what he is talking about, he got stuck for 30 minutes with his motorcar!
Namibia's most talented Endurists met here to display their skills. There were dozens of breakdowns! Only one rider in the Quad-A-Class reached the finish line. This was unheard of in Namibia before! The track was extremly demanding and especially the 4-Wheelers had their problems with it. However there was no need for E-MED’s men to intervene, which is the most important thing.
 2-wheel action
After the riders' breefing, the first bikes where sent on their way by Magda de Haan every other minute. In the Motorbike-Class I (Open Class) the expected duel between former champion Ingo Waldschmidt and his challenger Henner Rusch took place. Henner had already announced last week that he will be able to beat Ingo. A statement which earned him some sympathetic laughs. Heiko Hennes kept up well and also Ronnie Adams rode ahead in the pack up to the 3rd lap, after which he had to battle with papwiels. He should seriously consider getting a pair of wheels specially for Enduro races.
The participation of Andreas Brendel, a former flattrack-rider and NMSF-official, was a joyous sight. Despite making himself rare these days, he still has a very quick and constant way of riding. Another Oldie who hasn't lost his skill is Kai Hohmeier. Great that the old Toppies are still taking part in Enduro sport.
Results Motorbike-Class I:- Henner Rusch, Windhoek, Husaberg
- Ingo Waldschmidt, Döbra, KTM
- Heiko Hennes, Windhoek, Yamaha
In the Motorbike-Class II (Clubmen's Class) there was a surprise winner. Fred Robinson had already made a name for himself with a 2nd place at the Waldschmidt-Eggfarm-Enduro, but no one reckoned with his achievement at the Farm Lichtenstein Enduro. Fred won the overall distance with a 40 minute headstart, leaving Luke Pennefather in second ... and Luke is damn fast as well! With this achievement Fred qualifies himself for Class I.
A young man, who in the past was more or less a class filler, is Dicky Clerke. He outgrew himself on Lichtenstein and was able to land on the podium ahead of Heitzo Rieff. Great accomplishment!
We have already mentioned it: In the Quad-Class IV (Open Class) only one rider reached the finish and that was Jean Venter. The riders had just expected too much of their Quads and so one after the other broke down in the rough terrain. The great favourite for the overall victory, Fanie Steenkamp, already appeared to be the sure winner, when a broken chain put an end to it all. None of the riders have ever experienced such a series of breakdowns before.

In the Quad-Class V (Clubmen's Class) the participants showed that the track can be mastered without breakdowns; 80% of the riders reached the finish line. Tammo Piehl has been part of the leading pack for some time now and this time he grabbed the uppermost podium spot. This was one happy guy! Behind him, Simon Raines, Hein Venter, Gregory Dickman and Mark Johnston battled for position. After every leg, the positions were changed, and one can only speculate on the battles that must have taken place out there in the bushveld.
Results Quad-Class V:- Tammo Piehl, Windhoek, Yamaha
- Simon Raines, Windhoek, Yamaha
- Mark Johnston, Windhoek, Yamaha
In the supporting programme there was a powder-puff race in the Ladies'-Class VII. Here the happy winner was Mandy Huysamen, she was the only one to complete this tough track.
The Farm Lichtenstein Enduro was by far the toughest race and here the wheat seperated from the chaff, as a saying goes. Maybe one should shift back a gear where the degree of difficulty is concerned, so as not to frighten off new-comers. There are of course "Enduro-Purists" who are keen on seemingly unconquerable tracks!
For the prizegiving everybody met at Joker's Pizzeria & Sports Bar, where the discussions went on until late at night. A big Thank You goes to Farm Lichtenstein who not only made the Farm available, but who acted as main sponsor for this event.
