Welcome to the Enduro Newsletter. We hope you will find some valuable information in our Newsletters for the events to come.
Date of the next Enduro:
Venue:- The event will be held at Farm Lichtenstein / 35km out of Windhoek towards Rehoboth. The turn-off will be clearly marked.
Prize giving:- Please take note that the prize giving will start at 19:30 @ The Nampower Convention Centre. The winners of the 2008 Non-National classes will also receive prizes. Dinner will be served during the prize giving and a N$ 50.00 cover charge is applicable for all the partners of the riders. Please contact Annelise if you want to attend the prize giving by Friday 03rd April at the latest.
Documentation:- Annelise has sent out the documentation you will need for the next Enduro. If you have not received the mail, please contact Annelise and she will forward all necessary documents to you.
Please remember that after each event the rider needs to complete the Incident Report Form and return it to the Event Secretary. This needs to be done so that the Enduro Working Group can take note of what needs to be changed or taken into consideration for the next events. Even if you did not finish (DNF) you still have to fill in this form and hand it over to race control. There is a penalty of N$ 100.00 if you do not hand in this form at race day. There were a couple of riders at the last event that did not hand in the incident report form and you will be charged the penalty fee when you enter for the next Enduro. This was mentioned at riders briefing and at price giving again….you guys were informed. Some riders e-mailed the form after the race to Annelise….we will accept it this last time, at least you made the effort but it will not be accepted in future.
These are some of the points that were mentioned on the Incident Report Forms:
1. Route marking
Several riders commented that the marking of the route was bad. We have taken your comments to heart and will most definitely try and make the marking clearer for the next events. Due to all the rain in the week before the Enduro held at Tony Rust Race Track - a large amount of markers fell off trees, bushes etc. and this really made marking very difficult. There were guys marking the track every day of the week before the event. Thanks to the team of helpers that were out on the route during the week to remark the route.
2. Clickers
This system used to work fine in the past, but we did slip up with not checking / servicing clickers before we distributed them. We are also working on different ideas for plier-clickers to make things easier. We hope to have a better solution with future events planned. In future transponders will also be better positioned / marked, so that it is more visible to the eye, because a lot of riders missed these at the first event. The question that a lot of people asked was why we made use of clickers again. On the organizing side of things it was easier to make use of the 2 systems. Driving transponders out and fetching them after the race takes time and manpower on race-day. We might even incorporate marshal’s in future to make use of helmet stickers that the marshal’s tick off on every lap. For this however, we need volunteers to assist on race day and these guys need to be dropped off at a point and fetched after the race if they do not have their own transport. This only works if they know the route…..so as you guys can realize, it is not always that easy. We will work on this and hopefully improve in this department. If you are aware of anybody that is willing to assist as a marshal during the race – please contact Annelise at 081 2433981 or Contact Form.
3.Scruteneering
Ingo was very lenient at the 1st Enduro with scrutinizing of the bikes / riders. This was mentioned during the jury meeting after the race and scrutineering will be stricter at the next Enduro. These forms are e-mailed to you, please take the time to read them and bring all required items with to scruteneering. Most riders did not fill in the form with name, number and date………this wastes time……please do this before you come for scruteneering. There were some riders with incorrect numbers on their bikes ( attached are rules for 2009) please make sure you adhere to this for next events. The scrutineer will also check your medical kit – make sure you have a space blanket in your kit as well as a medical board. This is a piece of cloth with OK on the one side and a red + on the other side.
4. Bike / Quad prep
Some of you guys reported back to us that you got punctures / burnt out clutches etc. This is where bike preparation does play a big role. Some riders might not prepare their bikes / quads properly for these kind of conditions. Extra heavy duty tubes with slime in the tubes for an Enduro is a must. Hand-guards, exhaust pipe guards, skid plates, disc protectors are all very expensive items to buy, but will pay back over the long run. Most of the Motocross riders have this problem, they ride both MX and Enduro and it just ends up getting to expensive. We do try our best to cater for all of you out there, but we cannot guarantee that it will suit all of you. The staircase during the first event at Tony Rust for the bikes was tough. The problem with this was that there was an alternate route up there, but it was not marked.
4. Ladies quads
At the first event there was a big confusion regarding the Class for Ladies Quads. This matter was taken up with Hein Venter and his response was as follows. "As no one took the time, irrespective of requests, to communicate or send any changes to NMSF on the BAJA/Enduro SSR's for 2009 - the status as in 2008 remains - Ladies = NON National. This was confirmed during Jury meeting at Tony Rust race-track after event."
5. Juniors
We had a great turnout of junior riders. We were approached with this request by Tuesday prior to the event, and we thought that the route we had in mind was not too tough for the juniors. We were proven wrong and had to do some adjustments on race day but we will sort this out in future as well. We will incorporate the juniors in the SR’s, have an easier track available, better marked, with a transponder or clicker on the route and the first 3 riders will receive a medal at price giving. Entry fee for the junior class will be N$ 120.00 for the day in future.
6. General
There were some incidents that happened during the race that were noted but no actions were taken this time around.
- Alcohol was consumed by senior licensed persons not on duty on the day in the pit area, while the race was in progress.
- Several riders were driving against the flow of traffic past race control to get to their pits.
- 1st gear zone was ignored by several riders in the pit lane.
- Some riders received outside assistance at the start of the race.
- Riders did not finish and did not inform race control about this.
These are all offences that should have been penalized.
Attached to this letter you will find the rules for 2009 for EVERYBODY to read and study. Please do yourself the favour, irrespective whether you are experienced or a newcomer to the Enduro Sport. You want to have fun at a race and knowing your rules and regulations will assist you during your race.
A couple of riders have queried the point as to when exactly are they allowed to consume alcohol / when is a race classified as finished. This was the answer from Hein Venter of the NMSF regarding drinking alcohol in the pit lane / race control area: There should be a clear distinction between "end of race" and "end of event"
End of Race - Could arguably be defined as the Clark of the Course (COC) having acquainted him/herself that the last rider is in and when the COC authorized sweeping team to commence sweeping. (See also GCR's BAJA)
End of event - Could arguably be defined as the moment the final results were posted and signed off by the Jury - given no protests. (See GCR's BAJA)
One must apply the principle of reasonability and it is therefore my opinion that at "End of Race" (as defined above) can be taken as when competitors may start using alcohol. I say this in view of the NMSF and COC liability is concerned. Thus, once the COC declared the race "over" (over also includes) time bar - the NMSF or COC has no liability anymore except in as far as posting of results and hearing of possible protests.
We ask you to take this very important rule into account since riders can be disqualified if anybody in their pit area or even the rider is caught drinking in the pit area before the end of the race.
Contact Annelise as soon as possible to get your entries in. We hope to see you all again at the 2nd Enduro.
