This past weekend, the WMCC hosted the 3rd National of the Namibian MX Championship, and what a strange weekend
In the 65cc Class, Matthew had a mixed day of fortunes. His practice went reasonable and the first two heats went a lot better. He was able to finish both these heats in a very comfortable second position and was increasing his lap times the rougher the track got. The suspension on his bike has now been dialed in and the bike behaves very stable in rough conditions, which seems to give him a lot of confidence.
The third heat also started out good with Matthew being placed in second position right after the first turn. The bike seemed to be running fine until the second last lap when the motor cried ‘enough’. The bike just lost power and eventually the motor cut out. A few tries to re-start were futile and he unfortunately had to call it a day. A major disappointment for him, but at least he had two good heats which will assist with his current second position overall.
Tommy had a similar day as Matthew, except that his day started badly and ended extremely well. During practice there was no sign of what would happen in the first heat. He was the fasted rider on the track and seemed very comfortable on the bike. One must not forget, that this past Saturday, was the first time that Tommy was back on a bike after his operation to his hand four weeks ago.
In the first heat, Tommy missed out on the holeshot and was placed a close second place for the first two laps. He then made the pass for the lead and just pulled away from the competition. But then, half way through the heat, the motor just kept cutting out. Tommy was forced into the pits were we noticed that the clamp holding the carburetor to the intake boot had broken and the bike then sucked a lot of sand.
With some great team work and some outside assistance, thanks to Gareth Howard and Dieter Klosta (all from Yamaha stables) the motor was replaced in time for the second heat. Tommy’s nervous must have been at a all-time high as the bike was only just finished in time. It did not show however as he took the holeshot and just disappeared. Three-quarter way through the heat he had built up a big enough lead to relax and conserve his energy for the last heat.
In the third heat it was again all about the 107. He took the lead early, never looked back and raced away with a fantastic win in the ‘King of the Dirt’.
The day had a lot of promises, but that’s racing. The guys were satisfied with their results and are now even more motivated for the next race in two weeks time in Swakopmund. This coming weekend, Tommy will be participating at the MX Grand Prix trails which will be held in Windhoek, to determine the riders that will represent Namibia at the Moto-Cross Grand Prix in South Africa in July.
THE TEAM would like to again thank all its sponsors as well as Collin, Gareth and Dieter for their assistance this weekend.
