24.12.2008 Steering Committee for the sound level reduction in MX and Enduro

Changing the measuring method

The ‘Steering Committee for the sound level reduction in Motocross and Enduro’ was created in February 2008 and is chaired by Mr. Jean-Pierre Mougin, FIM Deputy President, with the group participation and support of the Manufacturers and Youthstream, to define a new method to control the sound level of competition motorcycles. This new method represents much closer the real sound levels of the motorcycles perceived by the spectators and in the surrounding area during practice and competition.
As a consequence of the work carried out by the DMU (Danish Motorcycle Union) during many years, the new method has been refined and validated during FIM Motocross and Enduro World Championship events by the FIM and its experts, with the close co-operation from the Manufacturers. The sound control methods and instruments remain identical as those used at present.

The new method, provisionally known as the ‘2 metre Max’ method, a name which will be modified in 2009, is aiming at better representing the important environmental stakes to which the FIM is particularly attentive. An additional working program has been defined and will be activated during the 2009 season with the aim to improve furthermore the accuracy of the new method, with the assistance of all the manufacturers and specialist suppliers of competition silencers. The aim is equally to inform the group of FIM Technical Stewards and the National Federations who will be introduced systematically to the new method as from the 2010 season.
The 2 documents enclosed (‘Why is the present measuring method wrong’ and ‘The new FIM measuring method’) are documents edited on 4 pages which can be printed on a double A4 format, easier in use.
