Philippaerts puts himself on pole to start Title defense at Faenza

The 2009 FIM Motocross World series kicked off today with the qualifying of the MX1, MX2 and Veterans classes. The day saw already a great crowd welcoming this improved series having 40 riders at the gate battling it out through two qualifying heats.
Reigning MX1 World Champion David Philippaerts took victory in the MX1 qualifying as young gun Arnaud Tonus won the MX2 qualifying. Race 1 of the Veterans’ series was taken by Peter Iven after Alex Puzar, second in the race, had taken pole.

MX1

After beautiful Miss Motocross showed the pre start board the MX1 Qualifying started off with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Max Nagl taking the holeshot. The German was soon passed by expert Kiwi Joshua Coppins as the Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross rider pulled away until a crash in the final stages hampered his qualifying. Nagl stopped due to a problem to his right hand which he injured in the off season. Italians David Philippaerts (Yamaha Monster Energy Motocross) and Tony Cairoli (Yamaha Red Bull De Carli) recovered together from the bottom of the top ten to the top three. Philippaerts went on to take victory as KTM Silver Action’s Jonathan Barragan defended the second spot from a hungry Cairoli who also clocked the fastest lap.
