AMU Baja - A Top Class Event

On Saturday, 12 May 2007, the Enduro working committee of the Windhoek Moto-cross club held the 2007 AMU Baja Enduro event. 68 Riders from Namibia, Zambia and South Africa entered and scrutineering was done on Friday evening. The race started at 08:30 with Darryl Curtis (SA) on his KTM. David Reeve from Zambia and Ingo Waldschmidt from Namibia, both on KTM’s followed in one minute intervals.

Grey Dick from South Africa left the line fourth and had a miner crash in the first 180m of the track in front of all the spectators and fellow riders. Luckily he was wearing a helmet, which, together with all the dust, hid his red face of shame. He got up quickly, got the bike running and was on the go in no time. Unfortunately for David Reeve from Zambia, his KTM’s engine seized in lap one and he had to retire early.

The quads left the line with Jacques Breedt from South Africa. He was followed by Lance Higgins from Zambia. Third from the line was our very own Dirkie Baard. All three of them were riding on Hondas. Fanie Steenkamp left sixth from the line, but had to retire after just one lap. He had an accident a while ago and broke his wrist. He decided on the last minute to enter as well, but in the first lap his wrist started to pain and Fanie decided to quit. Unfortunately for Rodney Davies from Namibia, he lost his clicker card on the first lap and was disqualified.

The weather was lovely with winds blowing the dust from the track for better visibility for the competitors. A few minor crashes caused some bruises, but no major crashes.
“The fact that the track was so clearly marked and prepared made it an incident free event. Well done to the organizers of the event.” said AMU Jury President Gillian Dykes after the event.
This event was actually a three in one, riders could score for the Namibian National Championship, Southern African Challenge and the All African Championship.

Of the 68 riders that entered, only 44 finished this grueling race. The day was ended on a very high note with a very successful auction held by Jonathan Basson and the prize giving. The organizers would like to thank everybody who helped make the day the huge success it was.
